I made this!

Can you believe it?

This is a very similar necklace to one I bought in Thailand. I found the pattern in a book. After the jump, a photo of the one I bought.

New Beadwork

A few new beaded items to show you:

leavesnecklace.jpg

This necklace took FOREVER. Each beaded leaf was a project unto itself. It’s a lariat which I’ve tied around my neck in this photo. I could also entwine the part that’s hanging down so that the whole thing loops around my neck.

I generally don’t like wearing bracelets–they get in my way with typing. But this bracelet had some techniques I’d never tried, so I gave it a shot. It only took me four hours or so, which in seed beading is nothing. I attached the clasp in a rather knuckleheaded manner, so I’m not showing you that part. Tee hee.

Sidewalk Messages

One of my favorite urban phenomena: messages spray painted onto the sidewalk.

Thai Buys

painting.jpg

At long last, we bring you photos of our Thailand haul. While on vacation in Chiang Mai, we shipped two crates filled with furniture and paintings and knick knacks back to SF. We said goodbye to the stuff in November, and we picked up everything here in March. That odyssey is a long, stupid story involving a Gmail spam filter which gobbled up our arrival notice, but thankfully one with a happy ending–we got our stuff! And huge thank yous to Soui and Taew, who waited patiently while we picked out all of this, bargained down the prices on everything, and arranged our shipping.

Above is our large painting. We hung it above the bed. Normally I wouldn’t hang anything above my bed in an earthquake zone, but it’s surprisingly light. And large! The pillow in the foreground is a Thai triangle pillow. It kind of props you up. It’s neat. None of it matches the bedding really, but we’re planning to move, so it’ll do for now.

Bead Demon

Inspired by an incredible bead jewelry store in Chiang Mai, I decided to take up beading. I nosed around a little and discovered there are hoards of women who delight in stringing tiny beads, one by one, onto tiny needles. A lot of the stuff they make is pretty awful, but there are a handful of “designers” who make really modern, interesting stuff. Below is a photo of the second necklace I ever constructed (the first one’s after the jump, along with my mind-boggling Thai necklaces), but I think it’s pretty darn good for a newbie.

Crazy Good Chocolates

charleschocolates.jpg

Let’s face it: we haven’t been so diligent about posting on this blog, save the occasional vacation photo bonanza. But when I came across a 30% off sale on Valentine’s Day candy at Charles Chocolates, I wanted to share it with you. Company HQ is across the bay in Emeryville and long, long ago, I interviewed the owner, Chuck, who is a real nice guy. (I always feel warm fuzzies when I buy things from nice people!) His ganache-filled hearts in raspberry, passion fruit, and mojito flavors are INSANE good, and available by themselves only at this time of year. If you’re interested, the sale ends Feb 18.
